We do not separate mothers and calves. - challenging Seaworld

The importance of killer whale social structure

Quote from the video clip '' The statement Blackfish made that we separate killer whales from their calves is far from the truth, we currently have Katina with 2 of her babies and we keep them together as a family''
Well lets see if that is true.

Firstly lets take Katina herself. Katina was an Icelandic Capture taken from her pod approximately 2 years old. Katina currently lives in Seaworld Orlando, she had 7 calves.
1985 Kalina died aged 25 and 9 days old with none of her calves in the same park
1988 Katerina separated aged 2, moved around the parks, deceased aged 10
1993 Taku extremely close to Katina resulting in mating, moved to San Antonio died a year later
1996 Unna moved to San Antonio for breeding, pregnant at 6, miscarried and been on medication since
2001 Ikaika  was transferred to Marineland Ontario, Canada on a breeding loan aged 4,  in exchange for three male beluga whales — Juno, Aurek, and Klondike
2006 Nalani STILL AT THE PARK cannot really be moved anywhere as she is full mother and son inbred
2010 Makaio STILL AT THE PARK born October 9, 2010
Had she been in the wild ALL the calves would be with her not just the last two. That is what a matriline group is. Seaworld's  own behaviour page states - ''The most fundamental social unit in a pod is a matrilineal group, which may include two or three generations of whales. A two-generation matrilineal group consists of a female whale and her offspring. A three-generation matrilineal group also includes her "grandchildren," the offspring of her female offspring. Individuals in a matrilineal group travel closely together.'' Katina's 2 generational group would be above and her 3 generation group would include
1993 Keet (to Kalina) - left behind in San Antonio aged 18 months
2004 Kalia (to Kasatka and Keet) has never met her grandmother as she was born in San Diego
2005 Halyn (Kayla and Keet) has never met her grandmother and is now deceased
1995 Keto (to Kalina) separated age 3 to Seaworld park, now living in Loro Parque Spain
1999 Tuar (to Kalina) separated aged 5 and move to San Antonio
2004 Skyla (to Kalina) separated aged 2 and sent to Loro Parque Spain
2010 Adan (to Kohana and Keto) has never met his grandmother as he lives in Spain
2012 Victoria (to Kohana and Keto) has never met her grandmother as she lives in Spain and is now deceased

So as we see on the film Katina has 2 of her offspring with her who are Nalani and Makaio. So where are the rest of her family??

Kalina - firstly had they been wild Kalina would not be here at all as Katina is Icelandic and Winston is a Pacific Southern Resident making Kalina an Atlantic/Pacific hybrid — a unique situation that would not have occurred in the wild. However she was born on September 25th 1985. Kalina first appeared in shows at SeaWorld Orlando in 1987, billed as "Baby Shamu", performing with her mother. On February 12, 1990, Kalina was separated from her mother and made to do a 'tour' of the parks and was transferred to SeaWorld Ohio. She was moved again in October of that year to SeaWorld San Diego, and again on May 30, 1991 to SeaWorld San Antonio. At the extremely young age of 7 and a half Kalina gave birth to her first calf, Keet at Seaworld Texas. This meant that Seaworld allowed her to be pregnant at only 6 years old, whilst she was still a baby herself.  In October 1994, Kalina was moved back to SeaWorld Orlando, where she lived with eight other killer whales, including her mother and a half sister, leaving her 18 month old son behind in San Antonio.
Where was the regard to the family bonds for the 4 years Kalina spent touring?
Scientists have researched and documented that
Females typically gave birth to their first viable calf at 14.1 years of age (SE=0.050; range 10-21 years) and those that survived produced a total of 4.7 calves at mean intervals of 4.9 years (SE=0.18; range 2-11 years) over a reproductive lifespan typically lasting about 24 years.
She gave birth to her second calf, another male, Keto on June 17, 1995. Keto was taken from Kalina at 3 and a half, he was moved from park to park as she was and now lives in Loro Parque, never to see his mother again.
Kalina then suffered a miscarriage and then gave birth to another male, Tuar, on June 22, 1999. Out of all her children, Kalina and Tuar spent the most time together. A whole 5 years! During the five years Kalina and Tuar created their mother/calf bond, she became pregnant for the 5th time. Just months before Tuar turned 5 years old, Kalina gave birth to her first daughter, Skyla. Two months later, Tuar was taken away from Kalina and sent to SeaWorld in Texas, never to see him again.
Out of four children, Kalina now has only Skyla left. But that didn’t last long as Skyla was taken away when she was just 2 years old and moved to Spain with her brother, Keto whom she had never met, never to see her mother again.
Where was the regard for Kalina's family bonds, she died with none of her calves in the same park as her?

Lets move on to Katerina
Katerina was born on November 4th 1988 to Katina and Kanduke. She also would not have been here had they been in the wild as Katina was Icelandic and Kanduke was a T7 Transient.
She lived only 2 years with her family before being following in Kalina's footsteps and being moved around the Seaworld parks.
She was first transferred to Ohio where she joined Kayla an orca of the same age and later was moved to San Antonio. At San Antonio she became a surrogate sister to her young cousin Keet. She died aged 10 at San Antonio.
Where was the regard for Katerina's family bond's, she was separated from her mother aged 2, never saw her again and died in a different Seaworld Park?

Taku -
Taku  was born on Sept 9th 1993 to mother Katina and father Tilikum. He was extremely close to his mother.
In 2004 he met a new whale who had been transferred called Takara, he liked her and followed her everywhere. 18 moths later she gave birth to his first calf Trua.
In September 2006 his mum also gave birth to his calf Nalani, which made her a full inbred from mother and son. Sickeningly she is referred to as 'the first successful inbred calf' I believe there is nothing successful about it, it should never have happened. He was moved to San Antonio in November 2006 and died from West Nile Virus in October 2007.
Where was the regard for the extremely close bond Taku had to his mother, after attacking trainers and mating with his mother it shows something was mentally disturbed within him

Unna
Unna lived with her mother, father, siblings, and other whales at her birthplace in Orlando for the first six years of her life. In August 2002, Katina gave birth to her fifth calf, a male named Ikaika. Unna was there to assist her mother during the labor. In December 2002, Unna was transferred to SeaWorld San Antonio because the park only had three whales at the time: two males who were fighting over one female. In late April 2006, Unna gave birth to a stillborn calf. Her health was compromised after this event and she has been on medication since. She is only allowed to work with the most experienced trainers after showing discrimination between trainers and aggression towards other whales especially to the older males in the group. Seperation can be a challenge for Unna, especially after the med pool for injections, endoscoping etc. She needs to be reinforced effectively to gain her trust.
Where was the regard for the family bond with Unna and her mother who assisted her mothers birth as a wild whale would have done, but then was moved to become pregnant as San Antonio only had 3 whales left?

Ikaika
Ikaika was born on August 25th 2002. Ikaika was transferred to Marineland (Ontario) Ontario, Canada on a breeding loan on November 18, 2006, in exchange for three male beluga whales — Juno, Aurek, and Klondike — who joined Spooky within the Wild Arctic area of SeaWorld Orlando. Ikaika is a growing male, his flukes have started to curl under, and he is about 17 feet (5.2 m) long. On November 13, 2011, Ikaika was transported to SeaWorld San Diego, after a legal battle to get him back as he was attacking Kiska and they had to be separated.
Where was the regard for the family bond with Ikaika and his mother, he would have stayed with her for life and even on being transferred back was sent to a different Seaworld Park?

Of the 15 Killer Whales that Seaworld's own website state should be in the three generational matraline group, only 2 remain. This is not just in this one family group, the separating of mothers and calves is a regular occurrence across Seaworld parks, which is made worse by the fact that they actually put in print that they understand the matraline structure of these pods. Obviously 15 orca would be far too many to have in one tank, so in that case then the captive breeding programme should have been modified to take into account the importance of the family groups.

Other calves separated from their mothers include
Kayla      -   separated at 2 years
Kohana   -   separated at 3 yrs 9 months
Shouka   -  separated at 9 years
Takara    -  separated at 12 years
Tekoa     -  separated at 3 years
Trua       -   separated at 3 years
Splash    -   separated at 2 yrs 6 months
Sumar    -   separated at 10 months

Seaworld seem to cloud the issue and facts by getting ex trainers such as Mark Simmonds to make statements such as the one below stating that Seaworld do not separate nursing mothers and calves. Well no one has said they do!!   Chuck Tompkins understood in the first video by using Katina and her 2 calves as an example, the one below is just to create extra confusion to those who haven't researched it themselves and just believe what they are told.

In the Blackfish movie the commentary clearly states Kalina was 4 and a half years old and doesn't state and age for Takara. There has been much debate over this section of the film with the orca's used being in dispute and not matching the commentary, this again distracts from what is being said.  So the best way to deal with that is to ignore the background and listen JUST to the commentary to prove that what is said is actually correct and can be proven.
As Seaworld says THE TRUTH IS IN OUR PARKS.

Free from Pathogens, Bacteria, Diseases found in the wild

How they leave
Uncovering The Lies Seaworld Supporters Believe to be True (Orca death's)

Many many times Seaworld make statements as do their supporters, then cut off the line of reply, blocking, deleting comments or not making comments available, so they remain unchallenged. Although they are unchallenged on Seaworld pages, they are not unchallenged elsewhere, whether their supporters choose to read that information remains to be seen, but they cannot say they were unaware when the information from necropsy reports, official documents and Seaworld's own animal profiles are there in the public domain for all to see.

The argument lately seems to be that captive orca's won't survive if released. It seems to be the new saying for the pro cap supporters, stating Keiko died. That is true he did die but died of pneumonia after 5 years of being a free whale and crossing an ocean unsupervised with no contact living as a fully wild whale.

On trying to query this with supporters of Captivity I was told  = Captive Cetaceans, an Orca born in captivity will not survive in the ocean. They are kept in what is considered a sterile environment, one free from pathogens, bacteria, diseases and dangers that would be found in the wild. Their immune systems are not equipped to handle the wild, nor do they know how to hunt for live fish. There is also a bit of tissue "breakdown" in captive born Orcas due to the sterile environment. This means skin infections could (and probably would) run rampant if they were released. They also know nothing about migrating because in captivity there is no need. In essence, releasing a captive born Orca would be a death sentence.

Although I believe it is unfair to name particular people, I believe it is fair to be able to answer those statements.

So in response to the above,  lets see what happens in Seaworld's sterile environments, free from pathogens, bacteria and diseases by looking at the causes of death from within those tanks involving any of the above.

15 orca in Seaworld tanks,  (not including the babies or oldest captures),  have died from infections caused by the above.  7 of those died of Pneumonia, so stating Keiko's death for not releasing when Orca's in the so called sterile tanks have died of the same thing, is hardly a valid argument.

You will also notice on the necropsy reports that none of them state anything about any tissue breakdown in captive born Orca.

Canuck - died Seaworld California aged 4. Cause of death Candidiasis

Despite knowing he was ill, Seaworld still made him perform in shows. His skin showed areas of sloughing which is brought on by long periods of inactivity.
His necropsy report shows his skin showed areas of sloughing which is brought on by long periods of inactivity. The thoracic cavity showed 2 large abscess's one approximately 6"x 9" and the other 12" x 9". The gastrointestinal tract internally appears to be ulcerated throughout with light plaques in the centers of the ulcerations. The cause of death was determined as Mycotic gastritis or Candidiasis which is a fungal infection.
This common mycotic disease in captive cetaceans occurs secondary to stress, unbalanced water disinfection with chlorines, or indiscriminate antibiotic therapy.

Taku - died Seaworld Texas aged 14 - cause of death Severe Multifocal Interstitial Pneumonia although in 2011 a new report uncovered he had actually died from West Nile Virus.
However,  he would not have died had he been in the ocean where contact with mosquito and stress related ulcers would have been none existent.
Most cases of marine mammal pneumonia have significant bacterial involvement, and most organisms cultured from terrestrial species have been identified in marine mammals. Pneumonia often can be considered the result of mismanagement. Here

Shawn died Seaworld California aged 2 - cause of death Pneumonia bacterial origin.

Large colonies of mixed bacteria were present but most were gram positive cocci arranged in large cluster.
The necropsy report concluded - the pneumonia in this animal somewhat resembles bovine shipping fever.
Most cases of marine mammal pneumonia have significant bacterial involvement, and most organisms cultured from terrestrial species have been identified in marine mammals. Pneumonia often can be considered the result of mismanagement. Here

Samoa and her calf  died Seaworld Texas aged 14. Cause of death -  primary mycotic endometritis developed which spread to the brain resulting in a fatal fulminating mycotic encephalitis.

Samoa has quite a large necropsy report due to her condition, She had a huge area in her brain that had been severely damaged by the spread of the fungus which originated in her uterus. She literally had brain damage as her brain was being eaten away by a common fungus found in soil.
It has been reported by Sea World – San Antonio (1992): Months before her death in 1992, horrified onlookers had watched the orca Samoa perform “bizarre, repetitive movements, hurling her body into the air and crashing down again and again upon the hard surface of a wide shelf at the side of her pool.” In a tragic note, Samoa was pregnant, and her full-term fetus died with her due to birth complications.
For this type of fungus to be present in Samoa’s uterus shows a couple of different things
Samoa had an open tear or cut in her uterus
While having the open cut Samoa had “something” inserted into her uterus that had the fungus on it
Samoa had a compromised immune system
Samoa went untreated for this specific fungus far too long which lead to her and her calf’s mortality. This fungus could have been easily transmitted via an infected medical instrument or even a trainer’s own hands. Transmission of the fungus could also come from the water in the pool when husbandry procedures were being performed. The orcas are not moved to clean water when conducting husbandry procedures. These sessions occur in the same pools the orcas swim, urinate, poop in and trainers swim/walk in.

Another option would be that during mating sessions with Kotar, he tore Samoa’s uterus and he himself infected Samoa with the fungus, either through the water transmission from the pool or himself directly. The risk for Zygomycosis is especially high when the skin or mucus membranes have been injured. Wound care is essential in preventing Zygomycosis. The wound must be carefully cleaned and monitored for signs of infection which obviously did not occur.

Samoa did not die of labour complications as many believe, she died of infection.

Ramu died Seaworld Florida aged 18 - cause of death given as Old Age !

Necropsy diagnosis
1. Cardiopulmonary decompensation
2. Infectious pleuritis
3. numerous senile changes

Dr David Kenny the marine park veterinarian said all three whales were showing signs of flu, they cannot make their theatrical leaps out of the water and are sluggish and grumpy. However the Dr Kenny said the whales hadn't started sneezing yet. Ramu was being treated for infection

Orky 2 died Seaworld California aged 30 cause of death pneumonia

The necropsy report says This animal appears to have died from acute pneumonia which was caused by.diminished immune competence associated with chronic wasting.
The degenerative kidney lesions seen on microscopic examination, along, with clinical laboratory test results, suggest the presence of a protein losing neghropathy, This type of kidney problem would produce a condition of chronic weight loss that would not readily respond to increased food intake. There was no investigation as the disease in itself would cause the weight loss.

Sea World officials say they still have enough males to operate a viable breeding program, however.

They also said they are heartened that Orky fathered two calves with new mates before dying--something that wouldn't have happened if he had stayed at Marineland, said Brad Andrews, vice president for marine mammals at Sea World.

Most cases of marine mammal pneumonia have significant bacterial involvement, and most organisms cultured from terrestrial species have been identified in marine mammals. Pneumonia often can be considered the result of mismanagement. Here

Nootka died Seaworld California aged 28 cause of death Pyogranulomatous; pneumonia

Seaworlds own  necropsy report states -  In august 1989 Nootka started to get ill. This animal
experienced a chronic illness which first became apparent in late August 1989. She was maintained on
antibiotic therapy until early December 1989. In December a deep mycoses serum panel as well as
the appearance of a mycotic glossal lesion made us aware that the animal was suffering from a combined fungus and yeast infection. The skin of the dorsal fin and around the blowhole is dried and cracked showing she had been floating for q while too, a result of dryness.

Kilroy died Seaworld California aged 13. Cause of death Gangrenous Pneumonia

On 23rd September 1978 Kilroy died. The diagnosis from his necropsy report is Gangrenous pneumonia, pulmonary edema and mycotic myocarditis.
The history prior to death states - Abnormal behavior and anorexia were noted about 8/15/78.Examination and lab work were done and treatment was instituted.Increased respiratory rate, dyspnea and a foul odor from blow hole were noted.Treatment was continued with little improvement. Condition and activity continued to decline and tube feeding was implemented.

Most cases of marine mammal pneumonia have significant bacterial involvement, and most organisms cultured from terrestrial species have been identified in marine mammals. Pneumonia often can be considered the result of mismanagement

Kenau and fetus died Seaworld Florida aged 17. Cause of death Hemorrhagic Bacterial Pneumonia

The necropsy doctors stated -
The pulmonary lesions are suggestive of a severe, acute, bacterial pneumonia. The mild renal lesions and the parasitic lesion(abscess caused by worms) are considered incidental to the cause of death.
lymph node, not otherwise specified (NOS), severe inflammation, neutrophilic infiltrate, associated with bacteria, rods.
Comment:Cause of death in this animal is probably shock associated with endotoxemia. The isolation of Pseudomonas from her calf helps to support this possibility, suggesting a terminal septicemia. Beyond this, it is difficult to determine what the initiating problem is in this case.

Her 12 month old fetus was alive and well up to the point of Keanu's death. In her short teenage life, she was taken from her own family aged 2, flown across the world, been put in ALL the Seaworld parks, had 4 pregnancies, 1 stillborn, 1 miscarriage, 1 live birth taken from her aged 2 and a half and one die with her. She was bought for the breeding programme and I believe Seaworld would have kept breeding her had she not taken ill and died.
Most cases of marine mammal pneumonia have significant bacterial involvement, and most organisms cultured from terrestrial species have been identified in marine mammals. Pneumonia often can be considered the result of mismanagement.

Kanduke died Seaworld Florida aged 25. Cause of death  Viral  Leptomenigitis

His necropsy report states - Initial results from first pathologist on 10-12-90 pointed toward a possible viral infection as evidenced by:1) Meningoencephalitis2) Lymphoid hyperplasia3) Enteritis A second set of tissues were submitted to a second histopathologist. Initial phone results indicated similar findings and additional slides containing meninges were sent by the 1st pathologist for review. The second histopathologist's major findings included:1) Leptomeningitis2) Chronic cerebral and spinal chord perivasculitis 3) Lymphoid inflammation of intestinal tract.
1993 Update:
Although not reflected or updated in NMFS MMIR, a 1993 study was published— “Isolation of St. Louis encephalitis virus from a killer whale” which indicates the death of Kanduke was caused by the St. Louis encephalitis virus with a mosquito vector.
To die from this he must have spent an awful lot of time just floating at the surface, something he would not have done in the wild. He would also have not eaten dead fish in the wild, he was a mammal eating orca.

Katerina died Seaworld Texas died aged 10. Cause of death - Severe Suppurative Hemorrhage. Bacterial Pneumonia

Bjossa died Seaworld California aged 24. Cause of death Bronchial Pneumonia

Bjossa was bought from Vancouver Aquarium. She was introduced to Corky 2 an older orca and a youngster Sumar who had been separated from his mother.
Bjossa who had never had the opportunity to look after her own babies, looked after Sumar most of the time, she performed in shows sometimes but nonetheless she fought an illness for a long time and in 2001 took sick once again. She stopped eating and was placed in the medical pool. By August she wasn't doing any better and was sent to the animal care area of the park out of public view and unfortunately she passed away on October 2001, not completing a full year at Seaworld.
She did however get a last chance to be a mother to Sumar as she was deprived of her own calves, so her last months with little Sumar were probably her happiest since being captured.

She died on bronco pneumonia at the young age of 24

Most cases of marine mammal pneumonia have significant bacterial involvement, and most organisms cultured from terrestrial species have been identified in marine mammals. Pneumonia often can be considered the result of mismanagement. Here

Kandu 3 - died Seaworld California aged 7. Cause of death Urameia Nephritis

On the night on June 15th 1975 she was lifted out of the pool in a sling to enable medication to be poured down her blowhole to try to counter an infection. They placed her in a swimming pool of fresh water to try to help her but she did not make it through the night. She died of nephritis and uremia, swollen kidneys and kidney failure causing urea and waste products to remain in the blood instead of being passed out in the urine. The condition can be caused by toxins, infection and autoimmune disease.

Kalina - dies Seaworld Florida aged 25. Cause of death Acute Bacterial Septicemia

On Monday October 4, 2010 Kalina died of Preacute Bacteremia Septicemia. In a span of 11 years, the original Baby “Shamu” gave birth to 5 children, with four of them still alive today. All of her babies were taken from her to fill spaces in other parks.

Halyn - died Seaworld Texas aged 2. Cause of death West Nile Virus
After Halyn was born, her mother Kayla rejected her and she had to be raised by the trainers. Again her mother Kayla was taken from her mother at only 2 and a half, giving her no experience with orca calves and no mother to learn from.
Soon after birth, Halyn was moved to animal care where she spent time with her trainers and dolphins. As she grew, it was decided to move her back to Shamu Stadium. In November 2006, her mom moved to SeaWorld Orlando to learn how to take care of any future calves so they say it was probably because she was pregnant again, nothing to do with learning anything.
Halyn was introduced to her father Keet, although he wasn't very playful he did have a lot of tolerance for his daughter and they bonded quite well.
Sadly on 15/6/2008 little Halyn died from Encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain apparently carried by mosquito

2013/2014 Taiji Drive Hunt Record and Figures

2013/2014 Taiji Drive Hunt Record and Figures

Tools of the trade, rods, hammer and plugs

Thank you to the Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians and Ric O'Barry's Cove Monitors without which no one would be aware of the goings on in the cove.

There were 54 days of successful drives during the 179 day period from 1st September to 26th February, so although it didn't actually feel like it, 125 days were blue cove days.

The hunt season per day links will take you to the Sea Shepherd cove Guardians albums.

After the global attention brought to Taiji from the huge bottlenose capture and the appearance of Angel Shoujo, many countries have held protests at Japanese Embassies across the globe, Ministers and Ambassadors have expressed their condemnation of the hunt, and hopefully this will be the last hunt we see.

The person able  to stop the drive hunt is Shinzo Abe Prime Minister of Japan as whilst the fishermen keep stating it is legal they will not stop it. The hunt didn't start until 1969 so it is NOT tradition as they claim, nor is it Taiji culture. Many many whaling towns closed when the IWC introduced the whaling ban and now many of those towns flourish embracing their whaling history as a tourist destination. The other drive hunting town of Futo is doing exactly that and is now also asking the people of Taiji to follow suit.

There are many petitions in our petition folder but the one relevant at the moment is here, please sign it and hopefully we will never see this drive hunt again.

                                                  September 1, 2013 Bottlenose dolphins

First day of the season and 60 bottlenose dolphins are driven into the cove.

Captive selection begins

  September 4, 2013 ~ 6 Captive Bottlenose Dolphins Transferred

6 bottle nose dolphins transferred in the concrete cells of Dolphin Resort

These dolphins were driven for 7 hours, as you can see from the picture, they were so exhausted the babies couldn't keep up.

September 7th, 2013 Bottlenose Dolphin Captive Selection

13 Bottlenose dolphins were taken for a life of captivity today in Taiji.

The pod of approximately 30-35 Pilot Whales clung together in the center of the cove, where they will be held overnight until they are slaughtered just after sunrise tomorrow morning

One of the largest of the pod, the monarch female struggled for over an hour under the tarps as the other juvenile whales continued to linger by her side.

Four babies were dumped back out at sea, but not before they witnessed their mothers brutally slaughtered in front of them

The enormously large dorsal fin of the matriarch in comparison to the size of the skiffs.

Total
52 captives
41 deaths
130-140 driven back out to sea

The Public and Media Worldwide erupted during this capture and the taking of Angel to the Taiji Whale Museum

28 striped dolphins were slaughtered and thrown into the skiffs

40-45 dolphins were driven including juveniles and babies. 6 were taken captive and the rest were slaughtered.

4 dolphins were manhandled into the skiffs and all taken into captivity

60 - 65 dolphins all lost their life this day.

A family of 10 were all slaughtered

14 dolphins were driven in, 3 were taken captive and 11 were slaughtered.

70-80 were driven in, 30-35 were released, the rest were slaughtered.

The Fisheries Minister issued the quota of 2013/2014 QUOTA: 2,013 total animals from seven species

Since the start of the season on September 1st, 2013 a total of 1,450 dolphins from six species have been driven into the cove in Taiji, Japan.
Of this total 834 were slaughtered, 158 were live-capture and 457 were released.

There were well short of the quota's which you would think will make them look at how they work them out
They still had 292 bottlenose left in quota
70         false killer whales - caught none
284        Pantropical spotted dolphins
126        Pacific white sided dolphins - only caught 8
  67        Risso's dolphins
  75        Short finned pilot whales
107        Striped dolphins
